Yesterday, they brought in a 17year old boy with seizures and severe decerebration. He had a tear in his basilar artery, which sent a embolism into his brain and caused a serious thalamus stroke. We all thought he’d have serious neurologic problems for the rest of his life.

When I walked into work today, he was sitting up, eating lunch and yapping away with his mom like nothing ever happened.

Spending about $15, Dr. Isaac Bogoch from Toronto General Hospital built a microscope out of his iPhone. He then used the device to diagnose a few parasitic worms, like hookworm.

The iScope isn’t ready for deployment out in the field. It’s sensitivity at detecting eggs isn’t quite up to snuff, but it’s getting close. Right now it can detect about 70 percent of helminth infections, compared to the 87 percent picked up by a regular light microscope

With a few more tweaks, the iScope could soon help health workers in rural regions of Tanzania, where diagnosing these infections is still a challenge.

Bogoch and his colleagues just published their study with the iScope in the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.
